Maize Market Outlook 2026: India & Global Trends, Climate Impact and What Lies Ahead

Maize is the world’s most widely produced grain, feeding poultry and livestock, supplying the starch and food industries, and increasingly fuelling ethanol plants. In India, the 2026 kharif crop is now being harvested after a weak, El Niño-affected monsoon, while global markets remain well supplied. Here is where the market stands this October and what buyers should expect next.

India: Market Today

Slightly smaller kharif area

Kharif maize was sown on about 93 lakh hectares this season, around 2% less than last year, according to the All India Progressive Crop Sown Report of 25 September 2026. The decline is concentrated in the south and west, where rainfall was most uneven:

StateChange in maize areaComment
Karnataka−20.4%Sharpest fall, yield risk from uneven rain
Andhra Pradesh−23.0%Lower area
Maharashtra−10.6%Lower area, yield risk from uneven rain
Telangana−8.0%First to harvest this season
Madhya Pradesh−2.2%Broadly stable
Uttar Pradesh0.0%Stable
Rajasthan+10.7%Higher area
Chhattisgarh+105%Large rise, but from a small base
All India−2.0%≈ 93 lakh ha vs ≈ 95 lakh ha last year

Late, staggered arrivals

The dry June delayed sowing, pushing the harvest back by around 15–20 days. New-crop supply will reach the market in waves rather than all at once, which can create regional supply gaps even as arrivals build elsewhere:

StateFirst arrivalsPeak arrivals
TelanganaLate SeptemberEarly October
RajasthanMid OctoberLate October – early November
Madhya PradeshLate OctoberMid November
MaharashtraEarly NovemberLate November
KarnatakaEarly OctoberEarly November

Prices

The minimum support price (MSP) for 2026-27 is ₹2,410 per quintal. In early October, mandi prices have mostly ranged between ₹2,000 and ₹2,400 per quintal depending on region and quality, with the all-India average running a little below MSP as fresh, higher-moisture grain enters the market. Dry, good-quality lots continue to command a premium.

Strong demand

Demand remains firm. Maize is now India’s leading ethanol feedstock, and competition between distilleries and poultry feed millers is supporting prices. Rail movement of maize picked up sharply in June–July 2026, running ahead of last year despite the late start to the season, a clear sign of strong buying interest.

Global Snapshot

Globally, supply is comfortable. In its October 2026 report, the USDA raised the US corn yield to about 181 bushels per acre and lifted US ending stocks to around 1.85 billion bushels. Brazil is heading for a record crop of about 148 million tonnes, while Argentina and Ukraine continue to export steadily. This keeps international maize prices subdued. China has been importing more in 2026 than a year ago and remains the key swing factor for world demand.

Climate: The 2026 El Niño Monsoon

India’s 2026 monsoon ended about 13% below normal, the weakest since 2015. A very dry June delayed sowing, July brought near-normal rain, and a weaker August–September came just as grain was filling in rain-fed belts.

Karnataka and Maharashtra, two of the largest maize states, saw the most uneven rainfall, so yield risk there is higher than the area figures alone suggest. Reflecting this, the USDA cut its India maize estimate by about 2 million tonnes in September. Harvest-time rain is the main quality risk now, as it raises grain moisture and the chance of aflatoxin.

What the Future Holds

  • Next 4–8 weeks: Arrivals from Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh will add supply through October–November, which typically keeps prices near or slightly below MSP.
  • December: Once Karnataka’s smaller harvest has been absorbed, lower southern supply could tighten the market in South India, supporting prices for feed buyers there.
  • Ethanol buying: The pace of distillery procurement will be the biggest swing factor for domestic prices.
  • Rabi crop: Post-monsoon soil moisture will decide winter maize sowing in Bihar and South India, and with it supply in spring 2027.
  • Long-term demand: India’s maize demand is projected to rise by around 44% by 2030-31, to nearly 72 million tonnes, driven by feed and biofuels.

Key Takeaways for Buyers

  • Expect prices close to MSP through November, with a firmer tone in South India towards December.
  • Plan sourcing state by state: Telangana and Rajasthan now, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra in November.
  • Specify moisture, aflatoxin and damaged-grain limits clearly, as late-season rain can affect early arrivals.
  • Watch ethanol procurement, rabi sowing and Chinese imports for signals on 2027 prices.
